AEOI to expand available technologies to preserve environment

Tehran, IRNA - Chairman of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran Mohammad Eslami has underlined that the organization will expand technologies available in this industry to protect environment.

Eslami said during a visit to the 20th International Exhibition of Iran Environment in Tehran, noting that the world plans to decrease the generation of carbon to zero in 2050; so, Iran hopes to go in line with this path.

One of the efforts in this respect is electricity generation from nuclear technology, because the government of Iran pursues this target in order to generate cheap energy and fuel, he said, noting that the country possesses a nuclear power plant, which has generated about 52 billion kilowatt-hours, and helped decline oil consumption in Iran.

The second sector is about the usage of nuclear technology to help preserve environment, he said, adding that the technology has been used to set up systems for preservation of water and soil.

As to the recent resolution approved by the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) against Iran's nuclear program, the AEOI chief said, reacting that the organization decided to adopt retaliatory effort. The stockpiles of uranium enriched up to 60 percent had increased at Natanz, which is a nuclear facility located in central Iran.

The production of 60 percent enriched uranium had started for the first time at Fordo, a fuel enrichment plant located in the central Iranian province of Qom.

A new generation of IR-6 centrifuges had replaced older machines at Fordo to enable a massive ramp-up in output.

The AEOI said it had fed uranium hexafluoride (UF6) gas feedstock into two cascades of IR-4 and IR-2m centrifuges in Natanz.

Another two cascades of the same centrifuges were prepared in the same facility for feeding UF6 gas in the upcoming days, it added.
